I'm procrastinating my final research papers pretty hard right now and my foot-dragging has actually resulted in the discovery of this academic text:

It is a fairly recent (August 2009) publication, so it includes an analysis of the transition to the digital world...

I'm happy to know that I have reached the intended audience, Miss D. I just went back and started from the beginning and the paper is just brilliantly put together with lots of real good quotes straight from the horse's mouth.
This analysis is helping me to appreciate the organic structure of the GD community, in which culture and business overlap to promote each other... and everyone seems to benefit... except maybe the venues that had to clean up from the party :)

Didn't you know Lesh offered .0003% commission of single tour ticket sales per tape given away/traded within 7 weeks of the first tour date???

Chapter 4 concerns itself with the digital age and contains a discussion of the pulling of the SBDs in 2005 from this place.
I'm finding the lead-up, which describes the transition to a digital trading world in which more tapes could be acquired faster, to be extremely interesting. Currently reading about The Music Never Stopped and how the work that went into that brought a number of large trading circles together to eventually put all of this stuff up here, at the Archive :)

I just had to post the above since it in some small way fit with the drivel I have posted here about the potential that in fact all the tapers, traders, even up to 05, in some significant way "aided" the whole development of the "enterprise" and to pull the SBDs, though their "right" was NOT the "right" economic decision (again, a big unknown, but...that's the point; we don't know).

That nicely sums up the contribution of the tape trading culture! I only wish my comeback was as funny :)
Hey, maybe there's still a chance...
Someone should circulate a petition asking for unpaid wages associated with all those hours spent smoking joints and converting newbies with old crusty tapes.
I bet some of the more famous tapers/traders were responsible for thousands of ticket sales?

thanks for your continuing contributions to the discussion; as you've gathered, many here are sick and tired of the superficial cliche responses, and initial back and forths that generally are associated with this issue (and having seen dozens over my four yrs here, I can appreciate that), but like you, I find it to be rich and complex arena for discussion and reasoned analysis...nothing to do with my wanting a bunch of free SBDs, etc., etc.

I think Grateful Dead Productions should hire the forum goons to do some analysis on their customer base and give them some suggestions on how to improve their marketing techniques.
Definitely making everything available for download wouldn't cost them much (except in bandwidth)... probably less than burning a whole bunch of CDs and making the covers.
I don't hold it against them for trying to make money off of records now that they aren't touring as consistently... the remaining members of the GD gave a lot of themselves from 65-95... not sure that Koons deserves jack shit... but the other guys have spouses/kids that need to be supported...
Right now what comes to mind is Michael Jacksons' family making tons of money since his death... same with Jimi Hendrix... Janis Joplin... Kurt Cobain... I could go on and on...
Why should your relatives/business partners continue to make money off something that YOU did, after you died? How is it that they own the rights to your creative productions just cuz they are related or signed some papers... when in reality they may have not contributed to the production of the artwork in the first place at all?

Well, as an aging parent, I may differ a bit with you on the "heir" aspect, but couldn't agree more with your take on this particular individual:

And the "...but the other guys have spouses/kids that need to be supported..." aspect is what does make it complicated since they will (have already as we've seen) differ in respect to thoughts on "what approach will continue to maximize income for the longest time?", etc., etc.
One comment that fits with your take on Koons (though without being there we can never be sure what Jerry might have said about her "contribution", if you follow), I would tend to think Mtn Girl WAS one that was there for so much of it that one might argue she was more directly involved in the "creativity" and thus, potentially more easily viewed as a "deserving heir" (of course, kids and care for Jerry factor in too).
If you don't mind me asking (but I think you already told us this), what exactly are you putting all of this together for as far as your schooling goes? Just curious...and forgot the specifics.

There is a really nice section on the discovery of the Betty Boards and an explanation from Cantor herself of the techniques she employed to make her mixes. I love the whole part about how this new batch of extremely high quality tapes was spread with the intention of breaking the patterns of trading hierarchies. This history lesson is really making me appreciate the ease with which I can listen to anything I want online at the click of a button.
Sometimes I wish I didn't have so much access so that I would just get to know a single show really well instead of hopping around all the time. It's just so hard to listen to only a few recordings when who knows... there could be something better out there... !
